The requirements for quality assurance and inspections of floor and roof Trusses specified in the International Building Code (IBC) and the International Residential Code (IRC) can be confusing. While the codes provide some requirements themselves, they also rely on the referenced standard, National Design Standard for Metal Plate Connected Wood Truss Construction, ANSI/TPI 1 (TPI 1). Inspection and quality requirements also vary depending on the building use, size, configuration, loading, and the qualifications of the component manufacturer.
This Code Summary Report will provide background on the different types of inspections required including in-plant inspections, site inspections, and Special Inspections. Truss plant quality assurance requirements will also be discussed. Finally, the Code Summary Report highlights the inspection requirement criteria specified in the IBC, IRC, and the referenced standard TPI 1. Versions of the model codes and standards referenced are noted in the References at the end of this document.
